How I Discovered Blogging
Although I only started this blog six months ago, I’ve been a writer my entire life. And most of that time I wanted to be a paid writer.
This blog has been part of an amazing journey that took place over the past six months. During that time I finally started the writing career I’ve been dreaming about since I was a child.
It isn’t exactly how I pictured it when I first started thinking of ways to make a living as a writer. It’s actually a lot more fun.
I have a degree in Sociology which I never had any idea what I would do with. And I’ve had many jobs since obtaining my degree, the details of which are not important for this post. Except to say that even the jobs I’ve enjoyed were not my big dream of what I wanted to do with my life professionally.
I wanted to be a writer.
I planned to write novels initially and I may still do that some day. But as it turns out, I love blogging. It suits my conversational writing style and tendency to look for the humor in things.
Parenting is something I am passionate about and that’s why it is the most frequent topic of my blog. I love my kids and my family life is everything I want it to be. But it isn’t always easy. And when it comes to parenting, if you don’t look for the humor in it, you’ll be too stressed out to enjoy the good parts.
But this blog doesn’t actually earn any income currently. The Worth Writing For blog was created as a way to practice my writing and create online writing samples for prospective freelance writing clients.
The good part is, I love it! I love writing about my life, my family, my kids and hopefully making you laugh a little. I also hope to inspire and let other parents know they are not alone in the often difficult parenting trenches. We’re all in this together, moms and dads!
But as far as my writing dream goes, the even better news is that this blog has landed me freelance writing clients. Who actually paid me to write! And the website has provided an internet home for my freelance writing portfolio and contact information.

Getting Started as a Freelance Writer and Blogger
I started a home daycare about two years ago and discovered I love working from home. And while I love caring for children, I found myself craving adult interaction and intellectual stimulation the kids just can’t provide. I was also interested in earning a little more money.
While searching for work at home jobs, I stumbled across Elna Cain’s writing course, Write Your Way to Your First $1K.
The above sentence gets to be its own paragraph because of what a huge thing this course ended up being for me. I signed up for the course in July 2016 and completed it in August. In September 2016, I landed my first paid writing gig. Since then I have made a small but consistent income from freelance writing and blogging online. In the last two months, my freelance income has surpassed my daycare income. And it is continuing to grow.
So, this is it. I have my dream job. How many people get to say that? I’m fortunate in that I can afford to have this as a side job until it becomes the real we-can-live-on-it income I want it to be. Until then I get to enjoy working from home and spending time with my two girls earning a part time income. I squeeze in my writing time during early mornings, late nights, and nap time. It’s working just fine.
So, in the last six months, I’ve gone from someone who had never had a paid writing gig to a freelance writer making a small, but consistent income that I hope will continue to grow. It’s taken a lot of work, but I am amazed and blessed with how it is going. It has exceeded all my expectations.
It all started with a random internet search for work at home jobs. I had no idea it was the beginning of a dream come true. Come to think of it, I met my husband online too, although it was several years ago. The internet has been pretty good to me over the years.
I hope you’ll stick with me in 2017 and see where my blog and writing career end up. I’m hoping to grow this blog and continue growing my freelance writing business over the next year. If the coming year is anything like the last one, I’m looking forward to plenty of surprises. Stay tuned.
