Kids benefit enormously from spending time outside! Nature is calming, restorative, and most of all fun!
As a parent, my mission is to get my kids outside as much as possible. Especially during warm weather months. And summer is here my friends! So, let’s send the kids out to the yard for a scavenger hunt!

I wanted to come up with a fun way to get my kids exploring outside. So, I created this backyard scavenger hunt printable and sent the kids on a mission. A mission to hunt up bugs and flowers and fuzzy things. All in our own backyard.
If your kids can read, they can take this scavenger hunt outside and run with it pretty much on their own. Most of the words are doable even for early readers.
And if you’re child is not yet a reader, a little assistance from a parent or older sibling and they should be able to head out on the hunt for everything on the list.
If you don’t have much of a backyard, this printable scavenger works just great on a walk through your neighborhood or a local park. Anywhere kids can explore outside.
How to Use this Backyard Scavenger Hunt Printable
To get started, grab the backyard scavenger hunt printable in my free resource library here. Then you can print out as many copies as you need.
The scavenger hunt prints out on regular letter size paper (8.5 x 11). It does have a little color on it but not so much it will drain your printer cartridge.
Give each of your kids a copy of the scavenger hunt printable (or let them work as a team) and go searching outside for all 15 items.
I’ve done this a couple different ways with my kids.
One way to use this printable is to send your kids outside with their backyard scavenger hunt list and a pencil and let them check off everything they find. But leave everything where it is.
The second way to play is to send kids out with a bucket (and a jar with holes in the lid for their bugs) along with the scavenger hunt printable and let them collect some of the things on the list. (Not the bird- they should just check off the bird or take a photo).
Collecting things definitely adds to the fun. And then if you have multiple kids playing they can compare their collections when everyone is done.
A third option is to have kids take pictures of things they find. Although you have to trust them with a camera or a phone. Which is something you understandably might be cautious about depending on the age of your kids. But it can be fun if you go along to protect your phone.
It might be hard to find everything on the list in one outing, depending on your backyard or the park where you choose to have your scavenger hunt. But the fun is in the search!
And you can always play again.
